Since 1974 the ‘Klippel Shield for Preparatory School Cricket’ has been contested between three strong cricket playing schools – Saint Kentigern, King’s School and Southwell School  with the Boys’ School taking stewardship of the Shield on many occasions. There has always been a very healthy rivalry between Saint Kentigern and King’s so the Saint Kentigern  Boys’ School 1st Xl Cricket team were thrilled to score an emphatic victory in the Klippel Shield last weekend, beating King’s School by 87 runs; possibly one of the most comprehensive wins ever in a Klippel Shield match. While there were fantastic individual performances, it was the efforts from all team members working cohesively that produced the result - total commitment, energy and skill won the day!

Following in the Boys’ Schools’ winning footsteps, Saint Kentigern’s top sailing team comprising, Stephanie Kirkman (captain), George Kirkman, Thomas Morton and James Delegat were out on the water at the end of the last week, representing the college at the Harken Schools Regatta being hosted by the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron.  Sailing on Friday saw the best secondary schools from Auckland and as far south as Nelson and north to Kerikeri competing for a place in the Gold Fleet racing on the Sunday. The team were pleased to finish the first day 3rd overall qualifying for Sunday’s tough competition.

With the ten top teams from round the country in the Gold Fleet, the College crew sailed extremely well and ended the day 3rd overall with only one point separating the teams in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Considering the classy opposition this was a very commendable result.

Similarly, the Saint Kentigern rowing team achieved success in three regattas over the weekend with students from the College rowing club continuing their strong early season form at the KRI3 Mighty River Power Regatta held at Lake Karapiro, following straight on from competitions the previous weekend where they rowed in both the Westlake Cup on the Friday, and the annual Head of the Harbour Regatta on the Saturday at Lake Pupuke.

Racing at Lake Pupuke is short-course sprint format which makes for great viewing and close racing, and is the ideal speed test for crews as they head into the business end of the season. These events also give the Club an opportunity to refine crew selections to gain the most boat speed and so it was pleasing to see some very good results come out of that weekend.

The rowers then headed to Lake Karapiro at the end of last week for the MRP Regatta, the final long-course event before the North Island Secondary Schools Championships in two weeks’ time. This is a great result at this stage of the season and the strongest regatta performance from the club in many years.
