Dianne of ACT Safety Ltd is this month concentrating on their EWP (Elevated Work Platforms) training and has provided the following information with a quote from Worksafe NZ Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (EWP) Best practice guidelines August 2014.

“An employer or principal who tells someone to use a MEWP, must make sure that the operator is adequately trained by a competent person and can demonstrate their competency before using any equipment”. As Dianne continued, “The only means identified as a demonstration of competency is through completing nationally recognised EWPs' NZQA unit standards. Worksafe NZ also recommend achieving competency for harness use which is the NZQA unit standard 23229.

“ACT Safety Ltd pride themselves in being able to produce competent trainees by offering training and assessment in the following units; US 23229 Use a safety harness for fall prevention when working at height. (Strongly recommended when using EWP's  or an equivalent unit standard). US 23966 (Prerequisite for all EWP units) Describe types of elevating work platforms (EWPs), and legislative requirements for their use; US 23960 Scissor lift EWP; US 23961 Truck mounted EWP; US 23962 Self-propelled boom lift EWP; US 23963 Trailer mounted EWP and US 23964 Vertical lift EWP.

“Learning Objectives - Demonstrate knowledge of legislative requirements in relation to Codes of practice and the use of EWP's.

•             Hazard management-identifying assessing and controlling hazards.

•             Demonstrate knowledge of types of EWP's, and their suitability for purpose

•             Safety features of EWP including pre start checks, use of safety harness, reporting problems and incidents

•             Emergency rescue plans and retrieval systems.

Training Options - Training includes theory and practical use of EWP's and the most popular choices are: Day 1 U.S. 23229, Day 2 U.S.23966 and 23962 23964.

Other options are available on request. All units standards are entered onto the framework, trainees receive an ACT Safe wallet card, and a certificate of achievement.”

ACT Safety Health & Safety courses cover the basic requirements for all safety representatives, supervisors and managers, and companies wishing to improve their overall health and safety and up-skill their workforce use these courses as the foundation building blocks. Trainees gain an understanding of the legislation; reinforce organisations’ safety practises and procedures, identify hazards, carry out risk assessment, develop control measures and monitor control measures for effectiveness. ACT Safety recommend using company documentation i.e. hazard id forms, risk assessments, incident reports, warning cards and they like to give the participants practice on completing the systems that they will be using back in the workplace.
