We begin this month with congratulations to talented netball players, Sydney Fraser (Year 12) and Amorangi Malesala (Year 13) who have been named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball team of 12 to compete at next month’s Trans-Tasman U19 Netball Tournament in Rotorua. Coach, Julie Seymour said that the calibre of those trialling this year was outstanding, ‘We are fortunate to have had a group of 24 of our top secondary school netballers to choose from and to be honest, it was a close call,’ she said.

Sydney and Amorangi join a strong team of netballers selected from around the country to take on Australia. The girls will meet early in May for a three day closed camp to prepare for the tournament to be played later in the month.  They are both talented shooters and join two other girls from Wellington East Girls’ College and Mt Albert Grammar as the four selected shooters in the squad.

The tournament will feature four teams with the NZSS team competing against Aotearoa Maori and two teams selected from the Australian U19 Squad; Australia Gold and Australia Green. Over the course of three days, all four teams will play each other twice. Equally talented player, Kristina Tipene (Year13) has also been selected for a New Zealand team. Kristina plays on defence and will be representing New Zealand in the Aotearoa Maori Secondary Schools team at an international tournament in Malaysia.

In more sports related news, Saint Kentigern was represented at the World Cup Touch 2015 Championship held in Brisbane last month with Year 12 student, Mererangi Paul and Old Collegians, Maia Jean Watene and Matt Sinclair travelling to Australia for the competition.

A much bigger trip was undertaken by 27 aspiring physicists from the Senior School, along with five staff members on a trip of a lifetime to Europe. First stop Paris where they visited the famous Palais de la Decouverte science museum and spent time at Euro Disney. From there they travelled by bus to Geneva, Switzerland where they spent a full day visiting CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. The next morning they were off to Lausanne and then experienced a trip through the Mühleberg Power Plant. Their final night was spent in Munich in Germany, stopping in Berne to take a tour of Einstein’s house and then spent a full day visiting to the Deutsches Museum; the world’s largest museum of Science and Technology. This was an incredible trip and, well as expanding the students’ knowledge on physics and its role in our evolving world today, it also opened their eyes to the study and jobs available to them involving the ever developing subject of physics.

Finally, the combined Boys’ and Girls’ Schools, along with the Preschool, held a special dawn service for their families which was held on the field at the Boys’ School on the Friday prior to Anzac Day. It was a fitting tribute that more than 1500 members of the community arose early to mark their respects.
