Comvita have been publishing a series on Food and Supplements for Metabolic Syndrome on their website over the past few weeks and their upcoming press releases will examine Comvita’s thinking on this subject and how to combat metabolic syndrome with supplements, a change of diet and exercise. This first press release on the subject is based on the article written by Dr Pablo German, which investigates “what is metabolic syndrome?”

As Dr German tells it, we have to go back hundreds of thousands, even millions of years’ ago to examine the way our ancestors used to live. We may not be completely sure of their lifestyles but we are fairly certain they ate meat, vegetables, fruits, seeds and whatever they could find. There was not much sugar around and no processed foods and, tellingly, food was not always available.

Now, we need to compare that environment with the way we live today in most modern societies. As Dr German goes on to say, “We have food available 24 hours a day and this food is highly processed with a high sugar content. We move very little and enjoy our sedentary lifestyles in front of screens (in fact I’m writing this in front of a screen and you are probably reading it in front of another screen). The environment in which we live now has changed very quickly and our genes have not been able to keep up with these changes. In our current high-sugar sedentary lifestyles our metabolisms are not able to maintain equilibrium in the long term. When metabolic equilibrium is lost, we fall into metabolic syndrome.”

As our doctor will assure us, metabolic syndrome is not a disease but people who present with the symptoms have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and other complications. The good news is, it is possible to revert to metabolic equilibrium with some fairly easy to achieve changes in our lifestyles. By consciously changing the way we eat and exercise, we will go a long way to restoring our metabolic equilibrium.

In Comvita’s next press release, they talk about how this can be done with supplements and certain types of food that can support a healthy lifestyle. This means eating a healthy diet and exercising so our metabolism stops thinking that it’s time to eat lots and conserve energy and goes back to metabolic equilibrium.
