House washing in New Zealand is still seen as a luxury, ‘let’s do it when it really needs it’ type service.  We are raised making our own tyre swings, forts and tree huts and this sense of rough and ready DIY has carried into our adult lives.  We have the Kiwi attitude of roll up your sleeves and do it yourself.  All Kiwi women can relate to rolling their eyes at the Kiwi bloke who refuses to pay someone else to do tasks around the home.  God forbid the neighbours will see and he will be forever deemed a lesser man. This is one of the things that make we Kiwis the ‘salt of the earth’ type community that other countries envy.  It’s how we spend our weekends and how we teach our children.

As they say at Smartwash, ‘so what’s the problem?’  Well, let’s compare us to the majority of countries in Europe or America who wouldn’t dare risk any form of DIY on their largest asset … their home.  They wouldn’t even do their own painting and gardening, let alone cleaning the house or treating the roof.  Some may say it’s because they are lazy – however, they would say it’s because they are protecting their investment!  Would you change your own spark plugs or replace your own transmission (a few home mechanics may be nodding their heads to that, good on you!).  Most of us wouldn’t have a clue around where to start or we might ‘give it a go’ and hope for the best.  We are happy to spend hundreds of dollars a year on our vehicles to have them looked after by the professionals, why not our homes?

The average house in Auckland now costs over $700,000.The average house wash?  Around $400 (price based on a 2-level average sized home).  That’s 0.05% of the value of your property!  Let’s say your car costs $10,000 and you spend $1000 per year in servicing and warrants – that’s a solid 10% spend, at least!  Why do we spend money on our cars, hair, gym memberships, but not our biggest assets, our homes?

So what do the professionals say?  And more importantly, what do they do for your hard earned money?  Managing director of Smartwash Waterblasting Ltd, Jeremy Pu says there’s a lot more to it than chucking water around. ‘A lot of people think they need strong water pressure to clean their house.  Although an amount of pressure is applied, it is more around the technique that we use that makes the difference.  Any cowboy can turn up and blast 3000 psi worth of water onto your house, sure - they will remove the dirt, but they’ll take your paint job with it!  We use a low pressure wash coupled with a combination of detergent and chemicals in order to make sure your property is sparkling clean and your paint job is left intact.  In fact, annual house washing can prolong the life of your paint job by up to 50%.  There’s another saving right there!  It is also worth checking the guarantee of your paint product: most companies will not guarantee their product unless you wash your property annually.  We also recommend annual roof treatments to stay on top of lichen and moss and at least an annual gutter clean to ensure your gutters don’t become blocked and damaged.  Property maintenance is easy and affordable if you deal with the right people’.
