Award-winning band Evermore will join the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in February at the orchestra’s annual Mazda Summer Matinée.

Evermore is Australian-based band of brothers, Jon, Dann and Peter Hume, who won Best Single and International Achievement Tuis at this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. The orchestra and Evermore first played together in November at the Qantas Media Awards. The band will perform a selection of its own songs at the Mazda Summer Matinée, backed by the full symphony orchestra on an outdoor stage at the Villa Maria Estate Auckland Winery.

Celebrating its 25th year, the APO’s Mazda Summer Matinée is a stylish musical picnic set amid the vines of Villa Maria Estate. The concert attracts a diverse audience, from classical music connoisseurs and casual weekenders looking for a distinctive musical experience, to festival-fatigued concertgoers who find the idea of sitting on a grassy bank with a glass of wine and good food appealing.

In addition to Evermore’s set, the three-hour concert programme will include operatic arias, performed by bass singer Conal Coad, and beloved classical works such as the Rondo from Mozart’s famous Horn Concerto, Bizet’s stirring L’Arlésienne Suite, the excitement of Saint-Säens’ Bacchanale and the climax of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The concert will be conducted by Ken Young.

The $75 ticket includes a gourmet picnic hamper, including two 187 ml bottles of Villa Maria wine (fruit juice and vegetarian options and $25 children’s hampers are also available), and parking at the venue. A chartered bus is also available.

The concert is the APO’s main fundraiser for the year with all the APO musicians and staff contributing their time on the day. This year all proceeds raised from the Matinée will go toward the orchestra’s extensive Education programme.

“For the past 25 years the Mazda Summer Matinée has been a much-anticipated event on the summer calendar and its mix of classical and contemporary musical makes it a wonderful day out for the whole family,” says APO Chief Executive, Barbara Glaser. “Past concerts have seen the orchestra successfully collaborate with New Zealand artists such as Don McGlashan and Goldenhorse and we are thrilled to have Evermore join us for what is certain to be another memorable musical day out.”

Tickets to the Mazda Summer Matinée are available now from the APO Ticket Office Ph 09 623 1052 or you can purchase tickets online at www.apo.co.nz  (note: online bookings will incur a $7 processing fee and tickets will be couriered).
