The team at Shape Landscaping have a well-earned reputation for their exceptional work and their careful implementation of their clients’ landscaping needs, but they are also known for their dedication to providing the best customer service possible. As they say, “It’s not just a job for us, instead it is our pride and joy to produce exceptional gardens”. At Shape Landscaping they take care of their clients’ landscape installation, from expert design to careful implementation and ongoing maintenance and, to this end, they are happy to share their knowledge this month on sowing summer bulbs and seeds.

Begonias should be planted around 3cm deep and about 15cm apart in well-drained soil out of direct sunlight. Ensure that the bulbs have adequate moisture but on the other hand don’t overwater them. Use slow-release fertilizer. Watch for caterpillars and powdery mildew - spray with fungicide if required. Deadhead regularly to promote new buds and keep the plant tidy. For larger double flowers, remove the two side buds on each flower stem. This allows the larger central bud to form.

Dahlias should be planted 10-15cm deep, 50cm apart in water-retentive but well-drained soil in full sun and shelter. Fertilise well with blood and bone and again with liquid fertiliser when flowering and spray with fungicide for powdery mildew if required. Tall varieties may need staking. Deadhead regularly to promote new buds and keep plants tidy. Water regularly to keep the dahlias turgid.

Gladioli should be planted 8-10cm deep and 15cm apart in a sheltered position with full sun and good drainage. Gladioli will flower approximately 100 days after planting so can be stagger-planted for a continuous display. Plant in groups for best effect. Water adequately and use minimal fertiliser. Tall varieties may need staking.

Calla Lillies (Zantedescia) can be established in clumps in the garden, Calla Lilies provide a wonderful display during early summer. It is important not to plant the bulbs until the soil temperatures reach around 14 degrees. In very cold areas they perform best if planted in pots rather than in the cold ground. Plant 5-7cm deep, and about 20-25cm apart in semi-shade to full sun. Good drainage is essential. Apply a general garden fertiliser low in nitrogen.
