Hundreds of Northland children with a passion for sport will now be able to take part in a national triathlon series after a local Bay of Islands venue was secured.

The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be held in the Bay of Islands for the first time allowing local youth the chance to participate in the world's largest under-16 triathlon series.

Community groups including; Sport Northland, The Paihia Business Association, Far North District Council, The Waitangi National Trust, Te Tii marae and several other local stakeholders worked alongside Sanitarium to bring the event to the region.

The new Bay of Islands Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be held at a site adjacent to the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Sport Northland chief executive Brent Eastwood says the central Northland location will make it easier for schools, local children and their families to get involved.

“With its centrally located venue at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, the event will be very accessible and Sport Northland is looking forward to supporting the event so that more Northland kids get to experience the thrill and challenge of participating in a triathlon, many for the first time ever.

“Sport Northland was only too happy to pick up the reins of running the only local kids triathlon four years ago to ensure young Northlanders continued to have an annual kid’s triathlon event close to home, but with a Weet-Bix event now scheduled for Northland, the time is right for us to help take the event to the next level, which we are sure will be the case with the Bay of Islands Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.”

The executive general manager of Sanitarium, Pierre van Heerden, says he’s pleased that Northland children will now have the opportunity to participate in one of the country’s best loved sporting events.

“Last year we had a record number of more than 24,000 children participating. The expansion of the TRYathlon into the Northland region will allow us to bring the event to a thousand more Kiwi kids, giving them the chance to build their self confidence and love of sport.

“The new Bay of Islands Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be staged on one of the most picturesque and stunning locations in New Zealand,” he says.

Northland kids can enter the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon as individuals, or in a team of two. Entries  for children aged between 7-15 years are open at try.weetbix.co.nz, or by calling 09 531 5080. The Bay of Islands Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will take place on April 10, 2016.

All participating children will receive race packs, a t-shirt, swim cap and a participation certificate and medal.
