Calling all new first time entrants, growers of amazing tomatoes, producers of high numbers and those to whom sustainability is important.

These are the four new categories in the 2016 Shirley Papanui Edible Garden Awards held in association with the Christchurch Horticultural Society. This year four new special awards will be given for: First Time Entrant, Best Tomatoes, Best Yield and Commitment to Sustainability.

This successful event which is now in its fourth year aims to encourage the production of vegetable and fruit gardens within residential properties, community organisations and schools.

The awards are open to any residents who live within the Shirley Papanui Ward and it is hoped that in time that these awards may be held across the city.

Categories include Residential House, Residential Unit, School/Early Learning Centre and Community gardens, and nominations close on February 19th next year.

This year local ward councillor Ali Jones has entered as she and her family have only recently moved into their own home after 4 years of renting because of earthquake insurance issues.

"We have really missed our garden,” she says. “Moving from transportable pots to having a garden again is really exciting. We have potatoes in, cauliflower, beans, lettuces, corn, peas and tomatoes in the greenhouse. We had our first new potatoes recently, they were fantastic.”

It’s important to note that the Edible Garden Awards were set up to promote the production and the development of edible gardens within the community and residences. The ‘perfect edible garden’ isn’t the goal, but a garden that produces and is sustainable year after year is what’s being encouraged and sought.

Every nominee will receive a visit from judges from the Horticultural Society where the judges can talk to the “gardener”, share knowledge, learn and celebrate the work that is being done.

Judges from the Horticultural Society will contact all nominees and arrange a viewing time in early March 2016 All nominees will be contacted and invited to an awards ceremony in April 2016 where every nominee will receive a certificate of acknowledgement and the new category winners will be named.
