As we come into summer, many Kiwis are ready to hit the road, get out of the cities and explore the hidden nook and crannies of this beautiful country of ours. With that spirit in mind, here are five of NZ's lesser known – but incredible – hidden gem beaches.

Tautuku Beach – the Catlins

Why pay millions for a private pristine beach when you can have Tautuku all to yourself? One of the South Island's best kept secrets, Tautuku is an expansive golden sandy beach about 30 minutes past Owaka heading south down the southern scenic route.

Wharariki Beach – Golden Bay

A true hidden gem at the very top tip of the South Island, Wharariki is not easy to reach – a four hour drive from Nelson, with the Takaka Hill to climb on the way, and that's just to reach the car park. From there's it's another 20 minutes on foot in order to get to the beach itself, but it's well worth the mission. Wild and stunning, with cathedral rocks poking from the water and an array of wildlife on display, including wild seals right there on the sand.

Gillespies Beach – West Coast

Blink and you'll miss it heading down the West Coast – there is a turn-off from Fox Glacier township which will take you to a narrow, winding gravel road through the bush. Follow it for about 15 kilometres and you'll be rewarded with a free camping spot and a stunning stone beach with wild waves and plenty of driftwood for building bivouacs. In the area you'll also find some cool abandoned mining equipment and a 3-4 hour return nature walk which takes you out to a seal colony.

Ahipara - Northland

Although growing in popularity, Ahipara still represents a quiet hideaway throughout most of the year. Only 15 minutes from Kaitaia, this area is popular among surfers for the reliable breaks and year-round warm water. The locally-famous Endless Summer Lodge (named after the cult 1966 surfer film) is a great place to stay, a backpackers with a friendly B&B style atmosphere.

Taylors Mistake - Christchurch

Though perhaps not 'hidden' from the locals, as a visitor to Christchurch it's easy to visit Sumner Beach without ever realising it has a smaller, more secluded cousin hiding just over the hill. A great spot to relax not too far from Christchurch city and enjoy a few brews and a game of beach cricket.
