Yesterday, the Taupo District Council Rural Fire Authority lifted the prohibited fire ban in the Taupo District and returned to a restricted season until further notice.

The continuing wet weather has meant the total ban was able to be lifted and the status has been returned to a restricted fire season where a permit is required to light an open fire. Council’s Principal Rural Fire Officer, Phil Parker will be monitoring the weather and will consider another ban, if the weather becomes very dry again.

Under the current fire restriction those wanting to light a fire, excluding gas BBQ’s and gas cookers, will need to apply for a fire permit from Taupo District Council.

The fire ban has been lifted under Section 20, 21 and 22 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 - the “Act” and Territorial Local Authority Bylaws.

Enquiries in regards to the current fire restriction and fire permits should be directed to Council’s Emergency Manager and Principle Rural Fire Officer, Phil Parker on 07 376 0803.
