Summer is an opportune time to consider the negative effects of too much sun, which most people are aware of nowadays. However, the team at Pharmaceutical Compounding have some timely advice on just how important Vitamin D is to our bodies.

Vitamin D is needed by every cell in the body and it either comes from the sun, food or by taking supplements. Pharmaceutical Compounding’s Vitamin D3 is the best form to supplement with for optimal immune function, absorption and use of calcium for bone health, muscle and nerve function (with low levels you can get bone and muscle pain) and normal blood clotting. Regarding food, Vitamin D is only found in oily fish, cod liver oil, beef liver and eggs.

As we are aware, the sun’s UV rays on our skin begin the production of Vitamin D within the skin and are highest at this time of the year. However, because we are now so paranoid about the possibility of the likelihood of skin cancer, we tend to cover up or apply sun block. Pharmaceutical Compounding advise that we need 20 minutes in sun in shorts and a t-shirt daily to produce enough vitamin D, but this is limited by the presence of clouds and pollution, the wearing of sun block, our age, the colour of our skin, (darker skin needs more sunlight to produce vitamin D) and the amount of exposed skin.

Vitamin D, also referred to as ‘Sunshine in a bottle’, is a steroid hormone and fat soluble vitamin that plays an essential role in supporting optimal bone and muscle health. Vitamin D improves immunity and helps protect against cardiovascular disease as it helps to reduce inflammation and arterial plaque production.
