The upgrade and rejuvenation of Taupo Airports’ main runway, main taxiway and commercial apron is now complete and ready to use.

Taupo Airports’ main runway, main taxiway and commercial apron have been upgraded after undergoing resurfacing as part of Councils Ten Year Plan. The resealing was essential to increase the life span of the runways.

The resurfacing of the runways ensures that they are reinforced and strengthened for current and future aircraft loading. The strengthening work is expected to extend the life of the asset for the next 15 to 20 years.

Airport General Manager, Mike Groome said that the runway project had gone exceptionally well. “Initially there were delays due to bad weather, but once the construction crew got underway there was no stopping the great work that has gone into the renovations.”

The new runway looks set to meet all expectations and we are looking forward to making good use of it,” he said.

Strengthening work was undertaken along the whole length of the main runway and the commercial aprons as well as rejuvenation seals over the light aircraft taxiways. Most of the paving work was carried out at night so that scheduled flight operations were not interrupted.

The works began back in October and were completed on 29th November, rounding out the program of work that the Taupo Airport Authority approved in 2006.
