Hoverd & Co. Property Management Looks At Proposed New Legislation On Smoke Alarm Installation

Les Hoverd of Hoverd & Co. Property Management is keen to advise that Hoverd & Co. is actively involved in managing the process of their clients meeting the new smoke alarm legislation for their investment properties and, to this end, he will be advising all landlords on the updating of the current legislation. 

As Les says, “The recent announcements by the Minister of Housing indicate a proposed timeline for the signalled mandatory requirement for smoke alarm installation of mid next year. Prior to this, legislation will be available for public review and comment sometime mid-November; realistically investment properties will be requiring specific smoke alarms by mid next year.”

Importantly Hoverd & Co. have fielded quite a few questions surrounding which smoke alarms will be appropriate, given some very cheap smoke alarms have been appearing in clearance bins in some of the major hardware retailers. The National Smoke Alarm Services advise that people are very careful as they believe that these cheap alarms will not satisfy the new legislation requirements. They also think that the legislation will require photoelectric smoke alarms with at least a 10 year lithium ion battery power source.

The National Smoke Alarm Services advise that the FireAngel ST-620 is perhaps the most advanced alarm compliant with the new legislation and is what NSAS use within their servicing which means that all their previous inspections will remain 100% compliant with the new legislation.
