Marcus Berndt, Head Chef at Provenir, the spectacular restaurant at Paihia Beach Resort & Spa, has been invited to represent the best of Whangarei and Northland at the 2016 Plate of Origin competition.

Plate of Origin is a new national competition that sees ten top restaurants from Palmerston North City and Manawatu team up with ten of the best restaurants from around New Zealand. Plate of Origin, will showcase some of New Zealand’s finest food and wine. Provenir is one of two restaurants selected from the Whangarei and Northland.

“I was incredibly honoured to be picked to represent Northland. I have so much pride in the food that’s produced here and think it’s fantastic to get the opportunity to share that with the rest of New Zealand,” says Marcus.

Marcus will be working alongside award-winning chef Ryan Marshall at Table 188. Ryan is looking forward to the challenge of Plate of Origin. “When I heard about it, I knew Table 188 had to be involved, it’s an experience we couldn’t pass up. Working with Marcus will be great too, he produces amazing food.”

“We are all incredibly excited proud of Marcus and his hardworking team at Provenir for being invited to this prestigious competition,” says Lyndsey Morrison, General Manager of Paihia Beach Resort & Spa.

German –born Head Chef Marcus Berndt has a true passion for New Zealand and the produce grown here. After working in Germany and Switzerland he found himself visiting New Zealand but not wanting to leave.  Marcus has worked in some of the best Restaurants in Auckland and Gisborne.

“The subtropical climate produces some very unique crops that cant be found anywhere else in New Zealand. The Farming lifestyle is such a huge part of Northlanders lives and the pride they take in the produces is great for a chef,” adds Marcus.

The competition has each restaurant feature at least two ‘hero’ products from the represented region. The meals are main dishes, with a price bracket of $35-$42 available for both lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Saturday of the NZ Agri Investment Week,  14th and 19th March 2016.

“Even though Marcus has been our head chef for a relatively short time, this invitation reflects the quality of food and amazing feedback we get at Provenir,” adds Lyndsey.

A celebrity food judge will taste each of the plates and the winners will be announced in the following Cuisine Magazine, released in May 2016.
