Around 20 new boarders at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School were introduced to a number of Christchurch activities at the weekend, much to the delight of passing tourists.

Canoeing on the Avon saw a number of girls soaked from the Antigua Boatsheds bridge to the hospital, while tourists took photos and laughed at the spectacle.

Director of Boarding at Rangi Ruru, Treena Ruwhiu, says she has an “outstanding group of Boarders this year”.

“I am thrilled with how our current boarders are going out of their way to welcome our newbies. The Year 13 Senior House Leaders have been superb; they have embraced the opportunity to support the new girls and our little ones are enamoured with the seniors,” she says

There are 100 Boarders this year with girls from Central Asia and the Middle East being the furthest from home.

“The new girls arrived a week on Monday when only the Year 13 girls were in the (boarding) House. This allowed the (Year 13 student) Leaders to spend time with the new girls and show them around. This included tours and talks as well as a trip out ice-skating and a picnic.  Then, last weekend, was our ‘In Weekend’ where all of our boarders stayed here and on Saturday morning, as fitting with tradition, the Year 13 girls took the new junior girls to the Antigua Boat Sheds to go canoeing on the Avon (and also to drench them in water!). We also had Clan (like school houses) activities, a presentation from an outside speaker, a quiz night, a movie night and then on Sunday, a day at the beach for a picnic, sand castle building competition and water-balloon volleyball. The weekend ended with a Boarders’ Service in the chapel,” says Treena.
