Winter is here.  That doesn’t mean you’re going to stay home.  There are plenty of activities that require you to go outside your home, some even require you to travel some distance.  You might be going to a rugby match, to visit a friend, take a road trip or just go down to the pub.  Whatever the case, if the weather’s cold, you’re going to want to put the heater on in your car.

If the heater in your vehicle isn’t working it could be an uncomfortable ride for you and your passengers.

Catherine Tocker from CoolCar on Te Rapa Road, Hamilton, says there are a number of reasons your heater might not be working.

“It could be an electrical problem, which all CoolCar businesses have the expertise to diagnose and repair,” she says.

“It could also be an engine cooling system issue,” says Catherine.  “The heater works because hot coolant circulates through the engine and when you turn the heater on it opens the heater tap which allows the coolant to flow through the heater core and air is warmed inside the heater box before coming out the vents.  A leaking heater core means coolant is lost when you turn on the heater and that may come inside the car, you may notice your heater is not working, wet carpets or a film on the windscreen.

“Another cooling system issue”, says Catherine, “is that people don’t realise they can’t mix different types of antifreeze together.

“If you have a late model Toyota that comes with long life Toyota antifreeze and you pour green antifreeze in over the top, it turns into glug, which can’t be pumped around, so your heater won’t work but more importantly your engine cooling won’t be operating as it needs to protect your engine” she says.

Sometimes a vehicle doesn’t have a heater at all.

“Beware of buying some imports like BMW from Singapore or Chinese-manufactured Geely cars, as they may not have any car heater functionality,” says Catherine.

“Like the Hillman Super Minx I learnt to drive in.  It didn’t have a heater.  My dad put in some sort of resistor-type thing and there was a fine line between having hot air and burning the car down.  Our environment isn’t really suited to a vehicle with no heater functionality”.

Catherine says if you don’t have a heater in your vehicle – it might be a classic car or perhaps heavy equipment – CoolCar can put one in.

“We can build heater boxes and install ducting and insulation as required to heat vehicles that don’t have heaters, including Eberspacher diesel heaters for bus and motorhome heating,” says Catherine.

“The same goes for air conditioning.  CoolCar Hamilton and CoolCar Auckland both have the expertise to build air-conditioning for anything that moves.”
