The owners of Palmerston North’s Alpha Motor Inn have come up with a clever way to show their passion for New Zealand – naming their rooms after New Zealand native birds and places.

The different types of rooms are named for the bird which represents the type of accommodation the guests can expect - Weka, Tui or Fantail.  The rooms, like the birds, have distinct personalities, as Brenda explains:

“The Weka does not have a sink. It is fine for reheating take-away foods, making toast for breakfast and making tea and coffee. There are no cooking facilities. This is the cheapest unit,” says Brenda.  “The Tui is fancier. It has a sink and cooking facilities and this makes it a larger unit. For only five dollars more than the Weka, it’s well worth booking this unit.  The fantail family room is as it says – for families.”

“We have five Weka studios and 10 Tui studios,” says Brenda. “There are two Fantail one-bedroom units and three Fantail family two-bedroom units.”

Additionally, the motel is divided into two blocks, named for the North and South Islands, with towns from each of the islands represented.

The North Island has Tauranga, Gisborne, Wairarapa, Coromandel and Taupo, all of which are Weka rooms.

Also in the North Island are Bay of Islands, Cape Reinga, Rotorua and Taranaki, which are Tui rooms.

Fantail family units in the North Island are Hamilton, Auckland and Napier.

The South Island has Picton, Nelson and Milford sound on the ground floor and Dunedin, West Coast and Kaikoura on the first floor, all of which are Tui rooms.

The South Island also has fantail family units Queenstown and Christchurch.

Brenda and Farnie say they are very proud of what they have achieved since they took over the motel in January 2015.  From the themed rooms to the bespoke murals and artwork, they are thrilled with what they’ve created and to hear good feedback from their guests makes it all worthwhile.
