Alex Boyd is not one to sit still.  Just as well, since one of his most important pieces of advice for his patients is “keep moving”.

Alex is a keen sportsman with a fascinating back story.  He is also head physiotherapist and co-owner of Re-energise Physio on Parton Road, Papamoa Beach, alongside his wife, Kathryn and his physio team Jo Fox and Clare Murden.

Alex’s path to Papamoa reads like a spy novel.  “I used to work as an intelligence analyst for the police in the UK creating profiles on criminals,” says Alex.  “I was mainly in the drugs squad but also worked on the London bombings towards the end of my tenure there.

“Although this was interesting work, I could never tell anyone about any of the people I was profiling as it was all confidential.  I had to sit in front of a computer screen all day, every day, which I found really boring as there was no contact with people.”

In 2006 Alex attended a silent meditation retreat in Thailand for 10 days with no reading, writing or speaking.

“After the first couple of days I had gone over the same scenarios repeatedly - where I had been, where I was going, missing parents and friends,” he says.  “Then I thought I would try and do something productive like figuring out what I wanted to do with my life workwise.”

Alex decided his future lay in physiotherapy, combining his love of sport (“I used to be a swimmer”) with his desire to interact with people.

From Borneo, Alex applied to universities in Australia and New Zealand and was accepted into AUT.  He travelled for six more months through Asia and Australia before landing in Auckland to start his degree.

In August 2015 Re-energise Physio opened its doors and Alex realised his calling.

“People come into the first session in a fair amount of pain usually,” says Alex.

“I like firstly being able to help them get relief from that pain, then watch them progress back to being able to do the things they love in their everyday life.

“It’s a great feeling when you get to discharge someone knowing how much pain they were originally in, and how great they feel now”.

“Starting Re-energise physio has provided me the opportunity to find more than one way to give back to our community.

“It has enabled me to do it my way,” he says.
