Palmerston North and the Manawatu region have a bevy of activities that are sure to excite and delight all types of traveler.

Local expert, Gillen Smiler, co-owner of Chancellor Motor Lodge and Conference Centre in Palmerston North, has some good advice on some of the best activities and things to do in the region.

“For those that are new to the region or even those that have been here a while, we recommend visiting Te Manawa to learn all about the history of our wonderful city and region,” says Gillen. Te Manawa includes a variety of collection based and hands on, interactive exhibitions developed in house, as well as national and international touring shows.

Ever wondered how we all became so mad about rugby? You can find out by visiting the New Zealand Rugby Museum. The New Zealand Rugby Museum in Palmerston North became the first public museum devoted to rugby with the mission to preserve, protect and display the history and heritage of New Zealand rugby.

“Without a doubt Rugby is an important part of our culture and heritage, so the New Zealand Rugby Museum is a must stop for any sports fanatic or culture lover in Palmerston North,” adds Gillen.

Looking for a little more excitement that would get the adrenalin pumping? “We recommend a visit to the River Valley for white water rafting for those who like to live life in the fast lane,” says Gillen. Set on the Rangitikei River, navigate your way through grade 5 rapids with half or full-day river rafting tours.

Want to experience New Zealand wildlife up-close? Then you have come to the right region.  Just 20 minutes south of Palmerston North is the Owlcatraz wildlife park. This one-of-a kind wildlife park has uncommon and fascinating animals set amongst native New Zealand bush, making it a truly Kiwi experience.

“This is your chance to see native owls like the Morepork and Ruru, amongst the not-so-run-of-the-mill farm animals.  And of course they have a neat glow-worm cave and a kiwi enclosure” comments Gillen.
