There’s no doubt the Real Estate Market is a problem right now for young people wanting to buy their first home.

With average house prices in Hamilton knocking on the door of $480,000, it’s no wonder people are desperately re-thinking their strategies for getting into a home.

Emily Hunt, from Lodge Real Estate in Dinsdale, Hamilton, is concerned about the wave of panic hitting young people in Hamilton which she says is spoiling their enjoyment of what should be one of the best times in their lives.

“I think everybody needs to take a deep breath, step back and think about how they’re going to make this situation work for them,” says Emily.  “Buying your first home has always been a nerve-wracking, yet exciting and wonderful time.  We need to try to maintain some of that pleasure in buying a home.”

Emily says she’s dismayed by the kinds of advice she’s heard being given to young people about what they should do to get into their first home, especially suggesting they give up the things in life that make them happy, whether it be electronic devices or Sky TV.

“This situation with the housing market has led to all kinds of advice being offered,” says Emily, “like giving up the things you love.  “You hear it a lot, with mortgage brokers and other experts suggesting young people need to give up what might be seen as unnecessary luxuries.

“The way I see it is, yes, of course you need to make some sacrifices to get the house you want – but if you end up living in your house and you’re miserable, what’s the point?”

Emily says she advises her clients to look at many options which suit their budget.  They might find they need to buy in an area which wasn’t their first choice but still allows them to live in a comfortable manner.

“The important thing is to get into a house,” says Emily.  “By the time you save five thousand dollars the type of house is worth ten more.  Act now.  Get on the ladder so your money is growing.  It will grow exponentially faster in property than in any bank.”

“Just don’t forget,” says Emily, “that buying a house is supposed to make you happy.”
