Isn’t it great to own a motorhome?  Nothing beats that feeling of freedom as you take off to explore the world, leaving all the stresses of life behind you.

What you don’t want to do is take the stress with you – so if you haven’t thought much about your motorhome’s fridge, maybe you should get that checked before you next hit the road.

Rodney Smith from CoolCar Air-Conditioning Centre is an expert in motorhome refrigeration units and says many people don’t take into consideration the fact that the fridge in their motorhome or campervan could already be a decade old.

“The baby boomers are all buying campervans now,” says Rodney, “which is great.  The problem is these vans are on their second or third generation owner.  They’re all eight to 10 years old, which, if it’s a gas fridge, means the fridge is probably poked.  Fridges don’t last that long. That’s not way that they’re designed.”

Rodney says as well as its age, another problem to be aware of is the fridge might not have been installed correctly in the first place.

“Incorrect installation is a big problem,” says Rodney.  “We usually only find out they’re not installed correctly after they’ve been brought in for repair.

Rodney says he often sees gas fridges which have been installed with inadequate ventilation.  “Consequently, they work very hard to effectively provide cooling at the beginning of their lives but they wear out very quickly at the end,” he says.  “They’ve been overtaxed.”

CoolCar Hamilton and Manukau charge a small fee for inspection of a motorhome fridge so they can give it a proper inspection, perhaps remove it from the vehicle to bench test it and log its performance before and after repairs.

“It’s a small price to pay to ensure you’re holiday isn’t going to be ruined by a malfunctioning fridge,” says Rodney.  “Remember it takes a day or two to test, diagnose and repair your fridge so don’t leave it to the last minute.”

Rodney and the team at CoolCar can also repair rooftop air conditioners on motorhomes and campervans and water heaters.

“We use safety equipment when we’re working on roofs of vehicles so we make sure our staff are safe,” he says.

Before you hit the road for your next holiday, get your fridge checked out for your own peace of mind.  Then relax and enjoy the holiday you deserve.
