Rangi Ruru’s Una Foyle (pronounced Oona) is off to Auckland to trial for New Zealand’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup football team that will play in Papua New Guinea in November.

The teen, who plays in the goalkeeper position, is one of only two Christchurch members in the current U20 squad.

“There’s one other young Christchurch woman in the team and she’s 19 so a bit older than me. I live and breathe football and am really focused on getting into the World Cup Team,” she says.

Una has been playing since she was 8 years old, currently playing for Coastal Spirit in their Premier Women’s team.  At only 17 years of age, the young footballer can also look ahead to the U20 World Cup following this one.

“After this campaign I’ll be training hard for selection for the next U20’s world cup in 2018 as I will still be eligible,” she says.

Rangi Ruru’s Director of Sport, Jo Fogarty, says Una’s is an exceptional achievement and shows what can be achieved with focus and hard work.

Una is in Auckland from the 10th to the 20th of June during which time the U20 squad will twice play the U19 team from the USA.

This is a tour for the USA and the U20’s team so these are just “friendlies”.
