Most of us have experienced it.  You start your car and smell something funny.

Catherine Tocker from CoolCar Air-Conditioning Centre says if you suspect the smell might be coming from your vehicle’s air conditioning system, it’s time to make an appointment at your nearest CoolCar Air-Conditioning Centre to have it checked out.

“We recommend you bring your vehicle in so our diagnostic team can do an air conditioning and heating check,” says Catherine. We want to make sure it’s not going to cause any harm to your health, your vehicle or to the environment.”

A build-up of debris in the air conditioning system has been known to lead to a problem known as Sick Car Syndrome, where residues in the air conditioning system cause bacteria or fungi to grow.  Symptoms can include coughing, sneezing, eye or throat irritation, nausea or tiredness.

“During our investigations, we will look for the source of the odour,” says Catherine, and find out if it’s your air-conditioning or heater causing the smell.”

Catherine says there a number of possibilities to look for, including leaking refrigerant or antifreeze, mould, fungus or debris blocking the evaporator or the pollen filter.

“There could be a dead animal like a rat or mouse in there,” says Catherine, “which isn’t uncommon in winter.

“When the days and nights start get colder,” she says, “small creatures look for a warm place to nest.  A nice, warm car which you’ve just parked in your driveway is the perfect place for such a creature to sleep or build a nest but it’s obviously very bad for your air conditioning system.”

“We can then tell you what kind of servicing or repairs will be required and give you an estimate of the cost.”

To book your car air-conditioning and heating check, phone 0508 COOLCAR (266 5227) and select the centre nearest to you in Auckland at North Shore, Onehunga, Manukau, Auckland City or East Tamaki and Hamilton and Waikato-wide.
