Over the past decade there has been a rapid uptake of solar technology in the international community with this boom leading to huge advances in technology and manufacturing techniques. Power Technology is there to provide the services to deliver this technology. They can connect people to the grid and any power generated by the system will be used by the connected load at the site. Once there is an excess of power it will be exported to the grid, and customers can offset their monthly power bills. Power Technology is happy to advise on which electricity retailer to go with for exporting power. No batteries are required for this type of system, therefore reducing the cost of the investment.

A hybrid photovoltaic system incorporates both batteries and the utility grid, to provide a reliable solar solution. The size of the battery bank is dependent on the customer’s critical load in times of a grid failure. These systems are able to export power to the grid and will switch to battery power when the grid is down. Power Technology typically recommend a generator back-up in case the grid is down for extended periods. This system is perfect for people who want to have the reliability of battery back-up in times of grid power failure, without the cost of a full off-grid battery bank.

An off grid photovoltaic system is completely independent from the utility grid. These systems are custom designed to supply the total load at the site, so it is extremely important to provide accurate information when sizing the system. These systems require batteries, an off grid inverter, charge controller and a back-up generator. There are two main ways to set up an Off-Grid system; either Direct Current (DC) or Alternating Current (AC) Coupled.

An AC coupled system uses an extra grid connect Inverter which supplies the site’s load before charging the batteries for later use. With a DC coupled system the power generated by the PV panels goes directly to the batteries and all loads are supplied from the batteries through a single inverter.

Power technology’s Selectronic and Kaco inverters are made to be used in conjunction with each other. This system is gaining a great reputation within the solar industry due to its reliable output and innovative communication features. Power Technology guide their customers through the whole off-grid process to ensure a reliable system. In off-grid systems, customers are often anxious about the longevity of the battery bank, however if a system is accurately designed the end of life can be 15 years or more.
