Stardome are putting science fiction and science fact ‘head to head’ for one night only on the 20th of August, where people can watch the classic film When Worlds Collide or Red Planet Mars in the planetarium. If this sounds like a great night out, it will be followed by, if the weather is clear, being able to take a look at the real thing through the telescopes.

In the film When Worlds Collide (G- suitable for general audience) scientists discover a distant planet is on a catastrophic collision course with Earth, and the government refuses to believe the evidence. It’s now up to private citizens to finance and build a spaceship to carry a limited number of people and animals to another planet to being a new civilisation.

Massive tidal waves, earthquakes, the impending destruction of our world and deciding who gets to live or die brings out the best and worst in people.

In the 1952 movie Red Planet Mars (PG – parental guidance recommended), an American scientist contacts Mars by radio and receives information that Mars is a utopia and that Earth’s people can be saved if they return to the worship of God. Revolution sweeps the Earth, including the Soviet Union. But there remains doubt about the messages being genuine, as an ex-Nazi claims he was duping the Americans.

Prospective guests are invited to come along and play the arcade machines before the show and afterwards, to stick around for telescopes (if the weather is clear).

These cult-classic films will be playing in the planetarium but are not 360-degree films and  more details can be found at http://www.stardome.org.nz .
