A change is on the way for Year 7 and 8 girls at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.

Principal Dr Sandra Hastie says among the changes are plans to break with the traditional “home room” environment meaning the Year 7 and 8’s will be taught by specialist teachers for every subject and therefore opening up a number of opportunities.

“We know that girls are ready for this kind of approach by age 11,” she says. “The girls will be supported in their learning by tutors and by the time they start Year 9 at Rangi Ruru, the teachers know the girls and their abilities even better, which gives them a head start as they begin the next stage of their education.

“With smaller class sizes, specialist teachers, lots of tailored space for girls and new resources, we are able to give our students unique learning opportunities,” she says. “Beyond the academic, we support and encourage our girls to take part in a wide variety of co-curricular activities. The “whole” girl is really important to us and celebrating her as an individual.”

A Year 7 and 8 information evening on Monday at Rangi Ruru will introduce parents to this new approach to teaching and learning, and how it aligns so well with the recent commitment to career and pathway planning.

“We have recently started working with Crimson Consulting, a globally recognised and connected company that works with students, looking at their career pathway and how to get them to where they want to be,” says Dr Hastie. “Our dedicated adviser, Ms Wen Qiu is already on the campus, providing access to strategies for career and pathway planning. This is significant for all of our students but particularly our Year 7 and 8’s as this is something that would traditionally only been available to senior students.”
