BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd, which services all of Auckland, says one of the most common issues that their on-call plumbers respond to is burst pipes, particularly in the winter.

"Unfortunately sometimes plumbing emergencies such as burst pipes and frozen pipes do happen, but you can take steps to limit the damage while you are waiting for our plumbers to arrive," the company says.

"The first thing to do is to prevent water passing the point of the leak."

You can do this by turning off the external main stop cock, commonly found under the letterbox in the toby box.

"If the escaping water cannot be controlled immediately, open your hose tap on full so that the pipework drains quickly."

BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd, one of Auckland’s true 24-7 services, says an extra tip is to switch off your electric hot water cylinder as this will protect the element from burning out if the cylinder empties.

Following these simple steps can help to reduce the damage and potential costs incurred as a result of burst pipes.

The best advice is: "Try not to panic."

The 24-7 on-call plumber from the experienced team at BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd will be there to take care of the problem when and where you need them most.
