I have to say that my first thoughts of having a Japanese Enzyme Spa at the upmarket Ikoi Spa in Takapuna, Auckland, were not brimming with anticipation.

After all the thought of my body being submerged (except for my head) in a "pit of sawdust) is not exactly on my every-day schedule.

However, I have to say that after my initial apprehension of climbing in the dry spa the results were over-whelmingly positive in terms of a totally relaxing body treatment.

The time-honoured Enzyme Spa originated in Japan around 100 years ago and involves a special technique whereby enzymes are extracted from organic product before undergoing a fermentation process with sugar beet. This then becomes one of the main substances in the Enzyme Spa.

The Spa itself is much like an adult sandpit but filled instead with pinewood sawdust, rice bran and enzyme liquid. You lie in just like you would a normal spa except you have an assistant who helps to dig your way and then they cover your whole body - except your head - in the dust.

If you are a fan of saunas you will enjoy the heat aspect that this Spa brings.

Once you have been in five minutes the whole of your body starts to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the experience.

The Spa not only brings a high degree of relaxation but also enables your skin to feel softer. Having a blissful head massage during my time in the Spa only helped to heighten the relaxation process.

Since having the Spa I have felt my sleep patterns have been better and more energy. I have also had a number of people, including my daughter, comment that I have lost weight.

Would I partake in another Enzyme Spa?  Definitely YES.
