As the soil begins to warm up spring bulbs and plants begin to flower and sprout their fresh new spring growth, and the helpful team at Shape Landscaping say this is a good time to get stuck in and plant all of those favourite spring and summer flowers and get the vegetable garden underway.  The Shape Landscaping team recommend sowing summer flower seeds including Alyssum, Begonia, Californian Poppy, Celosia, Cosmos, Dahlia, Gardenia, Gerbera, and Wallflower. They also advise that this is the time to plant perennials such as Salvias, Bergamot, Delphiniums, Heleniums, Cranesbill Geraniums and Hollyhocks. For anyone looking for a ground cover of flowers, now is the time to plant them in a sunny area of the garden.

Spring is also the time to get the vegetable garden ready by cultivating the soil with compost as it will bring up  the worms, hold in moisture and release plenty of all-natural nutrients to plants over spring, and plants appreciate a good dose of liquid compost or general fertiliser at this time of year. It’s also a great time to plant seedlings of sweet Florence fennel, artichokes and sow your favourite vegetable seeds including Carrots, Beetroot, Silverbeet and Peas directly into the garden. These can be protected from the snails by putting down some slug and snail pellets. To protect them from fungus diseases they should be sprayed with Copper Oxychloride. September is also the time to sow Lettuce, Leeks, Cabbage, Tomato, Capsicum, Courgette, Cucumber and Eggplant into trays of seed raising mix ready for transplanting later.

It’s a good idea at this time of the year to start staking young trees and shrubs, and prune blueberries and passionfruit, and pittosporum and Corokia hedges should be trimmed to keep them growing foliage at the base. It is also the perfect time to sow new lawns. If existing lawns are getting taken over by Onehunga weed or broadleaf weeds it’s a good time to spray these with a turf or prickle weed killer to ensure you’re prickle free for summer.
