Rangi Ruru Year 13 student Danielle Ackland has been awarded one of two Young Enterprise scholarships at the Regional Young Enterprise Scheme Awards held at the University of Canterbury on 27 October.

Danielle, who will study towards a Bachelor of Commerce and/or Bachelor of Law in 2017, applied for and was awarded the scholarship following her participation in Enterprise in Action (2015).

In addition, two Rangi Ruru teams took out top honours for their projects competing against 56 teams from the region. SURFSWELL won the Marketing and Promotions Excellence Award for their gingerbread daffodils and PAPER PROJECT won the Innovation Award for the interactive wall prints.

SURFSWELL (Sujin Jung, Lily Lee, Christine van Til, Grace Soong, Nicole Jackson), who won the Christchurch Dragon’s Den in June, evolved their original winning submission to promote and market daffodil gingerbreads in conjunction with a bank and the Cancer Society.  Original Idea June 2016. They are well on the way to achieving this partnership.

PAPER PROJECT (Georgia Hawley, Nicole Smith, Annelise Thompson) developed an innovative wall art print that activates using an app to provide civil emergency instructions to a mobile phone. Six prints have been designed to cover civil emergencies such as flood, earthquake and tornado. The group intends on promoting the prints to corporates for new buildings in Christchurch.

Teacher-in-charge, Jacqui Griffith says both SURFSWELL and PAPER PROJECT worked exceptionally well together as teams.

“These awards are the result of their total commitment as directors of the respective businesses. The girls have all learned a lot about setting up and running a business in a world where partnerships and contracts are often difficult to cement,” said Mrs Griffith.

Regional prizes are awarded following three rounds of competition including the regional Dragons' Den, Annual Review and marks from the Regional Coordinators.
