‘Beautiful costumes and a dreamlike interpretation.’

That’s how the Director of Theatre Arts at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School describes the upcoming junior school production.

Peter Rutherford says this fresh adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s familiar classic incorporates dance, a mixture of live and recorded music and beautiful costumes.

“With the Performing Arts building which includes specialist staff and music, dance and acting spaces, we are fortunate at Rangi Ruru to be able to produce a show of this standard,” he says.

The Visual Arts, Textiles technology and Design Faculties junior students have also been instrumental in designing and producing set elements for Alice in Wonderland. “ collaboration is key at Rangi Ruru and the staff and students have embraced this idea fully.”

With costumes such an integral aspect of the production Mandie Dickie has been brought in to work her magic. “I couldn’t have imagined producing this without Mandie” says Peter. “She has such a vibrant vision for the costumes.”

The cast includes over 70 girls in Years 9 and 10 with the lead role of Alice being performed by four girls - Rachel McSweeney (Year 10), Amelie Spinks (Year 9), Sarah Liddell (Year 10) and Sarah Lawrence (Year 10). A crew of more than 40 staff and students also support the production.

Mr Rutherford say Rangi Ruru’s production focuses on the dreamlike nature of the Alice story.

“As Alice travels through Wonderland, she learns to cope with her changing shape and size, as well as encountering many bizarre characters and situations. This is a coming of age tale we can all identify with, even into adulthood and we have a lot of fun with it.”
