“We have observed a much tighter temperature differential than in our conventional rooms, and this narrow differential assists in maintaining an even temperature in these cool stores. There is also much better increased air movement, again assisting in maintaining an even temperature.

 

“The plant supervisor equipment allows us to run at optimum efficiency as well – they are different but basically have much tigher control. These stores are typically designed for Gold Kiwi and they have a higher humidity and it’s a more even and steady humidity, as well leading to much less fruit loss. We target these stores for longer term fruit storage.

 

“We also find there is a noticeable difference in the humidity in the these rooms which is a big thing for us. These stores draw down the fruit to what a pre-cooler would do and if we were looking to build new stores again we would definitely use the same system.

 

“The benefits of this natural refrigeration system have really stacked up as it uses much less refrigerant, and is much easier to use. It is also a much friendlier system from a management point of view. We have really noticed the energy saving benefits of this solution, of course, and it has proven to be much better than the conventional design.”
