A cluster of funky purple tables each with a computer complete with Skype technology awaits visitors to all four Tararua libraries.

Courtesy of the government initiated Peoples’ Network state of the art broadband technology is now available to everyone.

The service offers every type of internet activity except games.

Think of it as an internet café - but even better - it’s free, it’s for everyone and it’s particularly ideal for families without a computer.

So visit the library, bring a dvd to watch an i-pod to listen to, or your camera to download.

Write your cv, apply for jobs on line, bank on line, create an email account, check trade me, or enjoy social networking activities like Bebo, MySpace and Facebook.

Hand in hand with the service are printing facilities available at 20c per page.

Peoples’ Network has originated from the National Library and is part of the government’s digital strategy which aims to have state of the art technology available in libraries through out New Zealand and with an emphasis on rural communities.

By March next year 34 libraries will have the programme says National Library technical support analyst Keiran McNabb.

The Tararua initiative has been ongoing over 18 months culminating in last week’s installation.

There are three computers in Eketahuna and Woodville, four in Pahiatua and six in Dannevirke.
