Nearly one-in-two men in New Zealand and Australia have a risk of getting some form of cancer in their lifetimes - the highest regional rate in the world, the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates.

The IARC has just released its Globocan 2018 database, which includes information on cancer rates around the world. Globally, it's estimated there will be 18.1 million new cases of cancer in 2018, with 9.6m deaths. The total number of people alive within 5 years of a cancer diagnosis, called the five-year prevalence, is estimated to be 43.8 million.

For New Zealand, IARC estimates there will be 35,897 new cases of cancer in 2018. It estimates that for men the risk of developing cancer before the age of 75 is 46.27 per cent. A third of New Zealand women - 32.89 per cent - are at risk of getting cancer. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer, accounting for 31 per cent - 10,741 - of the new cases in 2018, and for 1.85 per cent - 167 - of the deaths.

Wellington skin specialists Upper Hutt Skin Clinic believes that the best protection against skin cancer is to stay out of direct sun exposure during peak UV radiation hours. A comprehensive check at the clinic allows doctors to use dermatoscopy to assess moles and skin lesions. These are hand held instruments which use epiluminscent microscopy to look deep into the skin. Upper Hutt Skin Clinic’s doctors can recognise the microscopic signs of skin cancer, thus allowing patients to make informed decisions when it comes to your skin protection.

To prevent skin cancer, protective clothing and hats should be worn as well as suitable sunscreen. Reducing sun damage from UV Radiation is the most effective way to prevent skin cancer. The clinic recommends allmedic™ products which are clinical grade and hypoallergenic as a good defence against the harshness of the sun. The allmedic™ sun protection 50+ SPF face and body moisturising sunscreen offer broad spectrum protection against dangerous UVA and UVB radiation.

The Upper Hutt Skin Clinic stock allmedic skincare products. This range was developed by an award-winning team of doctors and dermatologists who all specialise in skin cancer and skin repair. Due to the high concentration of active ingredients, allmedic is only available through trained medical professionals.
