“A perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon, this tour takes about approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to complete,” says Aspen Manor Motel owner Grace Tong.
The tour comes with accurate audio of the location’s description, maps to the locations and historic images which brings each site to life. “This is a great and easy way to learn about Hamilton East’s interesting history,” adds Grace.
Hamilton East is one of Hamilton's oldest suburbs. Hamilton East was home to major Pa sites at Te Nihinihi (near Cobham Bridge) and at Opoia (near eastern side of Claudelands Bridge). Ngati Wairere, a sub tribe of Tainui, cultivated the river terraces which was utilised the Waikato river as both a food source and a means of transport.
Embracing its historic pass, many of the streets in Hamilton East are named after famous figures of the New Zealand Land Wars, including Governor George Grey and Maori chief Te Awaitaia.
