Fun-loving dogs and their like-minded owners enjoyed a great day at the Tongariro North Domain last Saturday at the annual ‘Dogs are Fun’ event.

The event, run by Taupo District Council, raised $1300 for Guide Dog Services, which is part of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind.

The proceedings were officially opened by Deputy Mayor Christine McElwee and included impressive displays by the Taupo Canine Obedience Club, a walk through town to collect donations and plenty of games and competitions for the dogs.

Council’s Animal Management Supervisor Cherry Hewitt says the event, which is in its 17th year is a great social day for dogs.

“Prizes were awarded to dogs with the waggiest tail, curliest coat, best bark or biggest dribble. Everyone had a fantastic time competing,” says Ms Hewitt.

The cost of breeding, raising and training a puppy to become a guide dog is over $22,500 – an expense which relies largely on public donations.
