Taranaki's Karl Dravitzki won the Buff Middle Distance Race in Taupo today, the first race of the Waitangi Orienteering Summer Carnival.

Australia's Jo Allison took out the women's field less than one minute ahead of Gisborne's Penny Kane.

A strong contingent of Australian's is present at the carnival which finishes in Auckland on Sunday, February 10.

Waitangi carnival event organiser Simon Addison said it was exciting to see so much talent at an orienteering race in New Zealand.

"Today's results were very even between Australia and New Zealand. No one seems to be giving anything away before the first test match in Hamilton on Monday," Simon said.

Today's results will be used for a chasing start tomorrow (Sunday) with the leaders starting first.
