Kaipara District Council is asking Dargaville and Baylys Beach residents to conserve water as usage is currently exceeding the amount flowing into the town’s reservoirs.

The current dry spell has reduced flows in the supply’s catchment and also caused increased usage. The result has seen levels in the Dargaville reservoir decline by up to 10 percent in a day.

“The situation is quite urgent and we will need a really good rain to change it,” says Claire Lichtwark-McInnes, Stakeholder Engagement Manager for Kaipara District Council.

Suggested ways of saving water include not using sprinklers or filling swimming pools, using hoses to an absolute minimum, avoiding washing vehicles, checking that tapes are not dripping and even turning the water off while brushing teeth.

The Council hopes that voluntary savings will avoid the need for the imposition of restrictions.
