Council has placed an additional 15 liquor ban information signs around the Taupo town centre to help police enforce a permanent liquor ban.

Community Support Manager Carole Parker says information signs are already in place around the perimeter of the liquor ban area. However police enforcing the ban have commented that people regularly say they haven’t seen any signs and are unaware of the ban.

The liquor control bylaw came into effect two years ago. It bans the consumption or possession of opened bottles or containers of alcohol in the Taupo Central Business District down to the control gates bridge, including the river/harbour area.

Mrs Parker says 15 new signs are being installed over the next few weeks in Tuwharetoa Street, Roberts Street, Heu heu Street, Ferry Road, Tongariro Street and Riverside Park.

Senior constable Peter Sowter says police are grateful for Council’s willingness to work with them to ensure the liquor ban is well promoted within the town centre. “If people breach the ban we are forced to take action.”

“It’s helpful to give them every opportunity to let them know they need to leave the liquor behind so they can enjoy themselves while staying within the law,” he said.

Mrs Parker says a follow up meeting will be held with police later in the year to see if the additional signage is sufficient or whether more might be needed.
