The City Council wants everyone from toddlers through to 16 years of age to attend the free Children’s Day celebrations in the Square from 11-3pm on Sunday, March 2.

Event Organiser, Lorene Fitzgerald, has organised a host of events including a stage show, Zippiti Zoo and interactive displays and workshops.

Children’s Day was established by the first Children’s Commissioner, in 1991 to heighten awareness of the importance and needs of children in society and ways of promoting their development. It has traditionally been held at the end of October but last year was transferred to the first Sunday in March.

Lorene Fitzgerald says it’s the time for children and families to participate in fun activities, discover old traditions and experience new ones Lorene says.

The day will feature entertainment from Krump Dance Group, cultural performances, a mini disco playing tunes from High School Musical and an all girl four piece rock band, A Minor Distraction, which won the future recording artist at the 2007 Rockquest Regional competitions.

The event’s major sponsor, Bunning’s Warehouse, will have an extensive range of DIY activities and workshops for children. There’ll be many stalls participating and supporting the day by providing parent information, activities, games and workshops to introduce children to new experiences and parents to new activities.

Lorene Fitzgerald says an information and action pack station will be set up for parents and children to make action pack activities together with the station providing all the resources.

There’ll be free balloons, action packs, stickers and fridge magnets, so bring the family.

“We’d love to see you on the day. The event is in its second year and I’m pleased with the support from the community,” she says.
