Canterbury Economic Development: Regional Governance Group.

A proposed Canterbury-wide organisation to act as a Regional Governance Group (RGG) for economic development will be established to act as a vehicle for regional stakeholders to liaise with central government on economic development issues.
The Christchurch City Council will be publicly consulting on the proposed RGG as part of its consultation process around the 2008-09 Draft Annual Plan, which starts on 17 March.
A total of 14 similar bodies are being established throughout New Zealand of which the Canterbury RGG is one. These bodies are required in response to a shift in the regional economic development policy and the RGG will focus mainly on “transformational projects”
The proposed RGG act as a governance structure, a regional interface with central government departments, and to facilitate access to selected government funds (the Regional Strategy Fund and the Enterprising Partnership Fund).
The proposed Canterbury group will have representatives from Christchurch City Council, Ashburton District Council, Environment Canterbury, Hurunui District Council, Kaikoura District Council, Mackenzie District Council, Selwyn District Council, Timaru District Council, Waimakariri District Council, Waimate District Council. Addtionally the proposed RGG will have representative from industry and Maori.
