The fifth New Zealand Community Trust junior boys’ secondary school national finals tournament start tomorrow (Tuesday 25 March) at Owen Delany Park in Taupo.

Aimed at Year 9 and 10 cricketers, these finals represent the culmination of a major national competition that attracted a record 150 school entries in 2007/08.

“The increasing strength of cricket across schools in New Zealand is indicative in the mix of this year’s finalists and the record number of entrants,” said Alec Astle, New Zealand Cricket National Development Manager.

“Of the eight finalists, only Otago Boys’ High School, joint winners in 2007, return from last year’s finals. Five of the eight schools - Westlake Boys’ High School, Rosehill College, Wanganui Collegiate, Scots College, and Ashburton College – are new to this stage of the tournament.

“The teams qualified through knockout matches within their Major Cricket Associations to reach the competition. All six of the major associations are represented, with two teams each from Northern Districts and Central Districts - the runners-up from the two regions with the most entries - also progressed.”

The schools in each pool play round-robin matches against each other over the first three days of the finals. They are then ranked on results and on day four play crossover matches to determine final placings and the eventual winner.

The national finals’ tournament will be opened at 9.15am on Tuesday March 25. First round matches starting at 10.30am.
