WELLINGTON CITY

State Wellington Firebirds and State Canterbury Wizards will contest the 2007/08 State Championship Final, starting Monday (7 April).

The match will be the fifth final of the current format, in the seventh season of State Insurance’s sponsorship of New Zealand’s premier domestic cricket competition.

Having topped the competition table after eight rounds, the Firebirds earned hosting rights.

The Firebirds have appeared in two previous finals, including the inaugural 2003/04 final, when they took the State Championship Trophy after a drawn game against the Wizards.

Canterbury return to the final, having finished runners-up to State Northern Knights last year, and are seeking the first-class title for the first time since 1998.

As in previous seasons, the final is a five-day match and a draw would again see the home team win the competition.

The umpires will be Phil Jones and Barry Frost.
