The new $18.1 million Queenstown Aquatic Centre is in need of a name, Queenstown Aquatic Centre manager Cam Sheppard said.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council would officially hand over the pool to Lakes Leisure Limited on May 8, before that date the council wanted a new name for the pool.

“We are encouraging the community, particularly younger members of the community to come up with some ideas,” Mr Sheppard said.

The council and Lakes Leisure were looking for imaginative, creative ideas that would capture what the pool was all about.

“The pool belongs to our community so we wanted to hand over the naming rights to our residents,” QLDC communications manager Meaghan Miller said.

The competition would run until 5pm on Friday, 2 May, with the winning name announced on Monday, 12 May.

“It’s well worth the effort for somebody, the winner will receive a prize of a six month aquatic membership,” Mr Sheppard said.

Entries could be submitted through the QLDC website at www.qldc.govt.nz  or by emailing nameourpool@qldc.govt.nz  .

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to get involved in this fantastic facility” said Mr Sheppard said.

The council would also host a public open day from 10am to 12.30pm on Saturday, May 10 to enable the community to take a first peek inside the complex.
