Dunedin road users are being encouraged to use the phone to dob in fellow motorists who run red lights - all in the name of safety.
The 0800 Full Stop (0800 38 55 98 7867) campaign will provide a service which would allow callers to identify motorists or cyclists who ignore red lights. The calls will be logged and a cautionary letter will be sent to the ‘spotted’ car’s owner/s advising them of the alleged offence.

While no further action will be taken the allegations will become part of a data-base which would then be available to Police dealing with vehicle crashes to consider whether there was an ongoing pattern of careless driving behaviour.

The DCC’s Customer Service Agency will initially handle 0800 Full Stop calls. Their specially designated and trained staff will forward details to Transit NZ who will generate letters of caution.

The two month long campaign, which runs ‘til mid June, is a collaborative initiative involving Dunedin Road Safety partners, DCC, NZ Police, Transit NZ and AMI Insurance aimed at reducing Dunedin’s poor record of intersection crashes: 987 injury crashes, six fatalities, 202 serious injuries in the five year period between 2002-2006.
