The future of the Wanaka Town Centre is behind the establishment of a new body to provide strategic direction and guidance, Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Duncan Field said.

“A number of issues with the common theme of growth have highlighted the central role of the town centre and the need to plan for the sustainable development of this business hub,” Mr Field said.

At Friday’s full council meeting the council adopted the brief for a Wanaka Town Centre Working Party and voted for the appointment of four members of the community to the working party.

Subject to approval by the Wanaka Community Board the members of the community-based working party would be:

Charlie Grant (Chairperson)
Lynne Fegan
Henry Heard
Chris Norman

The council appointed member of the working party was Councillor John S Wilson, with a member of the Wanaka Community Board to be appointed at its next meeting.

“What is needed is a holistic approach to ensuring that the town centre continues to be a desirable and vibrant heart, particularly given that Wanaka is now, and will, be facing proposals to develop additional town precincts,” Mr Field said.

It was also essential to enhance the character of the town centre and to give consideration to urban design elements including community safety.
