Never seen a painting by Charles Goldie? Then head down to the Taupo Museum.

The Goldie painting on show is a portrait of Ngati Whakaue chieftainess Rahapa Hinetapu of Te Arawa. It will remain on display until 25 June for the duration of the ‘Spirit of Place’ exhibition and sale at the museum.

Although most paintings in this special exhibition of historic New Zealand paintings, curated by the Ferner Galleries, are for sale, the Goldie belongs to a private collection but has been placed on display as a special treat.

The exhibition features close to 60 remarkable paintings. Many of these are magic vistas from the past by well known painters including Hoyte, Barraud and Blomfield. There are also a number of very familiar local scenes depicted in the paintings including Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, the Waikato River including Huka Falls, and the Aratiatia Rapids.

Friends of the Museum are acting as informal art guides throughout the exhibition to help people make the most of their tour of the gallery. Local people and visitors are urged to attend to see this fine exhibition which includes a floor talk by art expert Helene Phillips of Ferner Galleries at 1pm each day during the Erupt Lake Taupo Festival.

Helene will also be running an art investment seminar on Saturday the 17th May, at 4.30pm. To book, please contact the museum.

The ‘Spirit of Place’ exhibition and sale runs for six weeks until 25 June 2008. The museum is open every day from 10am to 4.30pm.
