A discussion document for the area known as Three Parks was released for public comment today, and forms part of a strategy to manage the significant growth expected in Wanaka.

“The council starting looking at future planning for Wanaka in 2002 and the process has evolved since then with the Wanaka 2020 workshops then the adoption of the Wanaka Structure Plan in 2007,” Queenstown Lakes District Council strategy committee chairwoman Gillian Macleod said.

“Throughout that process an area referred to as Three Parks, a 100 hectare site southwest of Mount Iron, was earmarked as an appropriate site to locate some of Wanaka’s projected growth,” she said.

The discussion document proposed a change to the District Plan to allow for a number of uses such as larger retail stores, new businesses and land for new housing over the next twenty years.

Councillor Macleod said that the council was totally committed to maintaining the vitality of the current Wanaka town centre. “But we also recognise that it would be difficult to locate larger retail stores, such as a second supermarket, in that area,” she said.

Other ideas proposed in the discussion document included a mix of open spaces, a network of walk and cycle ways, and well connected streets to cater for a range of travel types.

“We really want to hear what the community thinks about the ideas contained in the document,” Councillor Macleod said.

The discussion document and a submission form could be downloaded from the council website – www.qldc.govt.nz – or picked up from the Wanaka council office or libraries district-wide.

The community was encouraged to attend an open day, to be held on June 5, between 2 pm and 7pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre. “This is a great opportunity for people to come along and discuss any issues they might have, directly with the project team,” Councillor Macleod said.

Comments on the discussion document closed on June 13.

Meanwhile, consultation on Plan Change 11b (Definition of Ground Level, Height and the Rural General, Gibbston Character, Low and High Density Residential, Rural Living, Township, Quail Rise and Meadow Park Zone Building Height Standards) was still running, with submissions closing on May 30.
