Missing Person Enquiry-Jay Hyeon Kim

Police engaged on the inquiry into missing Korean tourist Jae Hyeon KIM are trying to narrow the 'window' within which it is likely he met his death.

Inquiry head, Detective Inspector John Winter said the current window stretched from the 29th September 2003 (the last Eftpos transaction at Westport) to the 4th December 2003 when Kim was due to leave New Zealand. This was far too wide and police were now engaged in an analysis of other events in the Westport area around that time that could be connected to Mr Kim's disappearance. He was confident that the Westport/Charleston area remained the 'centre of gravity'.

Those events include crimes, occurrences and incidents reported to police that were the subject of police files or undocumented matters that were known to staff who were serving in the area at the time. Persons connected to those events would also be of interest, said D/I Winter.

Police staff that had since transferred, or were no longer in the job, would also be spoken to.

Detective Inspector Winter again asked for the anonymous letter writer to make contact and identify the date and location where Mr Kim disappeared. Even if the author was unsure of the exact date, an approximation would be useful as it would assist police to narrow the information search. The author would need to verify that they were the supplier of the original information in order to prevent police being given bogus information.
